A fire detection and warning system can be a vital part of protecting persons within a premises, particularly in high risk areas and premises with sleeping accommodation. Early fire detection and warning is essential for a quick and safe evacuation of all persons in the event of a fire.

When carrying out a fire risk assessment in accordance with the ‘Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005’ it is necessary to determine whether an adequate fire detection and warning system is in place within your premises, and if so that it is being maintained to the current standards.

There is a range of different grades of fire alarm systems and categories of coverage provided by the various systems. An adequate system for your premises will depend on many different factors that come into question when carrying out the risk assessment. The buildings structure, the use of the premises, number of occupants and evacuation procedure are just some of the considerations that determine what level of coverage you require.

Once the grade and category of fire alarm system has been determined it is important that the system meets the current British standards either BS 5839: part 1 and / or BS 5839: part 6 (depending on the type of premises). Certification of compliance to these standards needs to be provided when it comes to the design, installation, commissioning, verification and routine servicing of the alarm system.
